Lyman Briggs or Honors College for Ultimate Transfer to U of M

My son is going to MSU in the Fall as a freshman with the intent of transferring to U of M in his second year (as he did not get in this year).

He has the opportunity to go to Lyman Briggs or the Honor College.

Which one will give him the best chance for a successful transfer?

What kind of GPA will he have to maintain?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

It’s not either/or. You can do both. Do both. He might even end up liking it. Tell him to go in with an open mind.

GPA for what? To stay in the HC? To transfer to U of M? What?

Also, if he intends on transferring, why not just have him go to a CC to save money? No point in spending $25k for a year at MSU if he has already made up his mind to not stay there.

His definite goal is to end up at U of M. A definite option is to go to Wayne for a year.

I was inquiring as to a resume/transcript standpoint when making his U of M application in a year, if he were to go to MSU for his freshman year, would he hypothetically be better with a 3.9 out of Lyman Briggs or a 3.6 out of the Honors College?

I thought it was an either/or proposition at MSU.

You can be in Lyman Briggs and be in Honors College at the same time. Lyman Briggs has Honors classes, too. I believe they have at least one floor for Honors students to live on separate from the other students.

He better make sure he takes classes that he can transfer.

FAFSA, that really isn’t a good way to look at it (3.9 at LB vs 3.6 at HC). He should do both and try to get the best grades possible.

If he goes to State, he should do both. Maybe. You need to see if LB classes transfer like shyanne said.

First off, you can do both simultaneously, and in fact a lot of LB kids are HC kids.

Secondly, the difficulty of the Honors College and the difficulty of Lyman Briggs classes are not so different…outside of Honors Math (which is very, very difficult here), many honors classes are either comparable to or easier than LB classes. For example, the LB bio classes are actually considered to be harder than the honors bio classes here. Honors Chem, on the other hand, is supposed to be a bit more difficult than LB.

Also, I second the CC suggestion. If your son doesn’t plan on staying here, then there really is no point in paying upwards of 20k just so your son can say “I got a good GPA at MSU”. If your son can get a 3.9-4.0 at a CC, his chances are just as likely, if not better, than if he took difficult honors courses here and got a 3.6.
