I am not able to go to one of their visit days until October, but I want to get my application in asap. If I select Lyman Briggs as my major preference on my application, get accepted, but realize that it’s not right for me, would I be able to switch out of it? I don’t want to risk not having a spot if I realize it is what I want.
My son is currently in LB. He did that exact thing when he applied because he did not take the Briggs specific tour until late September. If your back up plan is College of Nat. Sciences then it should not be an issue to switch later. You might feel better about your decision if you contact the counseling offices of both schools either by phone or via email to confirm this plan. Contact info is easily found on line.
My son did not particularly like living in Holmes Hall freshman year (socially or location wise) but academically has not regretted his decision to be in LB. You will have smaller classes for your basic required chem, bio, physics, math etc in Briggs vs Nat. Sci. As a junior he is now dealing more with advisers/classes outside of LB as he is into his major required classes, but has found good advising in both colleges.
As a side tip you might look into the SpartaNature program for the summer before freshman year.
Thank you for you help!
@vsb1225 I know this was a while ago, but in what ways did your son not like Holmes Hall/LB socially?
Wow, sorry I must have missed this… for what it’s worth now… my son had a lousy freshman experience in Holmes. He and his suitemates were on a floor of mostly upper classman who had no interest in interacting with freshman. And the RA was non-existant. His particular roommate had a friend in another dorm and was not interested in socializing in Holmes and the suitemates went home frequently. So he had to work to make friends outside of the dorm. The Holmes location can feel pretty far from a lot of campus things too. But it was great for going to classes freshman year and meeting for group projects and study groups. I really think if he had been on a more socially open or freshman floor that would have helped a lot. He moved out of Holmes for his sophomore year.
