I was just wondering what are some good schools for school counseling... My gf is going to finish up at Santa Clara University at the end of next school year and she really would like to go into school counseling. Currently she is looking into Columbia, Penn, UCLA, Vanderbilt, NYU, UT Austin, Boston College, William & Mary, UNC Chapel Hill, & GWU (in that order of preference). Are there any other schools that people would recommend???

As far as stats she has a 3.9 at SCU as a psych major, 1210 GRE (all of the above schools have an avg. of around 1100 for their PhD departments in their respective graduate schools of education - the only schools with above 1200 avgs. are Stanford & Northwestern, Harvard's is like 1180), she has done research with a few profs at SCU (for psych) so she should have good recs, she has been a TA, & as pretty involved in school activities, she is also a great writer so her personal statements/essays should be really good.

As far as safeties what schools should she look at?

I got my school counseling degree (actually it was called Human Development Counseling) from Vanderbilt lo these many years ago, and though most education courses are rinky-dink, I fear, I thought that most of my courses were interesting!

St. Johns University School Counseling ( long haul out to Queens)

Hunter College (CUNY).

NYU does do a PhD in School Psychology

NYU has a pretty good program and is well represented in some of the NYC schools. Corrine Weinman, Director of Fieldwork, Advisement & Student Services has excellent placements as far as doing feildwork.

Also, your friend may want to check out school accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and RElated Educational Programs. Only about 188 school counseling programs are CACREP accredited. Here's the link:

sybbie she is interested is school counseling and TC at Columbia does offer a school counseling program...under the link you gave me it is called Counseling Psychology with a Specialization in School Counseling. She loves that program so if you read abour the Ed.M that TC offers in this it will give you a good idea of what she wants.

A degree in Counseling Psychology has a lot of versatility. I started into graduate schoo thinking I wanted to do school guidance counseling but eventually became a licensed psychologist working in community mental health. My classmates did many different things, including school psychology. So it gives you many options. I currently supervise an intern who came through the Counseling Psychology program at University of Oregeon and I have been very impressed with the preparation she got. Overall, Counseling Psych programs seem to have better funding for their students than Clinical Psych programs do...
