Hello, I know that it’s a bit early to tell but I’d like to get into M.I.T. I was confused on what I wanted to do when I grow up and I think I know. I desire to be a software creator or an entrepreneur. I’m currently 15 in a small town in Michigan (South Lyon). I currently have a 3.8 GPA (that’s last years) and I take all the honors courses possible. Next year I’m taking 4-5 AP courses. Freshman New PSAT I got a 1000 (horrible I know) but I just took it again this year and I think I did better. I’m going to study a lot this year to do very good on the actual SAT. As extra curriculars go, I’m wanting to start entrepreneur club in my high school and I’m in key club (volunteering) and Science Olympiad. I played high school varsity soccer and club soccer as well. I plan to do a lot more this summer. I also plan to try self-teaching coding and start a business or clothing-line this summer. I know it doesn’t look good, by I’m going to work really hard this summer to achieve my dream at M.I.T. I’m improving with all A-A+s and I’m trying to do more things. Anyway, please let me know what you think I can do to achieve my goal, like my dad did when he went to Harvard and M.I.T
Some quick things to keep in mind:
- Keep your grades up. Keep ahead of your class work. It sounds like you have appropriate interests. For PSAT and SAT, preparation classes or tutoring can be very helpful.
- You don't need to go to MIT to be a success in any field. There are a LOT of very good universities in the US (and some good ones elsewhere as well). Getting into MIT is unlikely for everyone, and is getting more difficult over time (ditto for Harvard), but with good grades getting into some very good universities should be no problem.
- Go ahead and apply to MIT if you still have the grades when the time comes, but also have other schools in mind. You want to apply to a range of universities. When the time comes to think about which schools to apply to, you will need to keep cost in mind, as well as what subjects the university is good at, where you would be comfortable, and where your grades and test scores are likely to get you into. Find a good match for YOU, and don't pay much attention to rankings.
- Your state has REALLY GOOD public universities. The best software engineer that I ever worked with graduated from the University of Michigan. The worst software engineer that I ever worked with graduated from Harvard (it might not be Harvard's fault, he probably would have been just as bad if he had graduated from anywhere else).
- Don't stress out too much about all of this. IMHO the US puts too much stress on our high school students. It sounds like you will do very well.
To get into MIT you do need the grades and the test scores to be at a relatively high level. But the grades and the test scores are more of a “check the box” item, not a discriminator as to who gets admitted. MIT wants to see that you can do the work and after that, and more importantly, what kind of person are you. Leadership, drive, being willing to take chances, etc. are the things that will make you stand out. It isn’t a contest as to how many ECs you can have but the quality of your involvement in them that counts.
Do the things that you think will put you in a good position for MIT and you’ll do well wherever you end up going to college. MIT’s admit rate is extremely low, so a plan B is a must.
Thankyou all for your advice. I am taking other colleges into thought (such as UofM, etc.). I will continue to work hard and have a great rest of your week
Michigan Tech is really good, particularly for undergrad. I’ve worked with several engineers both from it and the two really big schools in MI. I don’t think you’d give up much to anybody anywhere by aspiring to MTU.
But I kind of figure that the student who wants to learn for the sake of learning, who wants to do for the sake of doing, who sees college as an integrated part of a means to an end - and neither THE means nor THE end - has an inherently better chance.
Those movies where someone tries to change who they are to gain the affection of a specific person rarely end well. I gotta think admissions counselors know when their school is being stalked too.
You may want to look into MIT Launch, a program for high school entrepreneurs.
It won’t get you into college but may help with your club and interest in entrepreneurship.
