I'm majoring in chemical/molecular engineering, and I was wondering what computer would be best for the major? I don't have much of a personal preference..

I personally have a preference for Mac because its much more user friendly. In CME the courses that require a computer are ESG111 (C programming), CME 315 (you will use mathematica), CME 427 (again c programming), and CME 440/441 (you will use ChemCAD). You can pass with a mac for all classes except 440/441. ChemCAD is only available for windows but you can install windows on a mac either through parallel or bootcamp and still be able to use it.

Overall i recommend mac because its just better quality. It is very user friendly and very durable. I have had mine for over 2 years and I still get more than 4 hours on a charge.

Bottom line is it wont matter much for this major.

And it’s EXPENSIVE. Get a Windows PC instead, then install Linux on it. (But not Dells. Ew.)

Out of the list above, I’ve only taken ESG 111 and a Mac was fine. I used the virtual sinc site, which is something you download from SBU and allows you to basically use a SINC site computer, which is windows. So either should be fine

Also, before I came to stony I emailed Dr. Rafailovich and she told me a Mac would be fine and that there shouldn’t be any problems with it.

Thinkpad, awesome support, they fedexed me overnight under warranty a new keyboard when my current one broke to the university. They don’t treat you like babies. Also built to milspec standards and can survive awesome incidents such as a 200lb robot running it over with not a scratch.

Pick the laptop that suites your particular engineering needs :P
