Mac or PC?

Hi guys!

I'm an incoming freshman and I was wondering if there was one that was more compatible. At the tour, they said both were fine, but I wasn't sure if in the long run, that was actually true or not. If it makes a difference, I'm in the honors college, going to Dietrich and I'm probably going to go into linguistics.

Thanks! :)

Mac or PC honors college (Sutherland) - majoring in theater, psychology, minor in film? Also IOS or Android? Are there specific Pitt Apps that run better on one of the 2 platforms? Any advice on Cell carriers and if Sutherland will have WiFi?

Thanks

If you’re not doing CS or Engineering (which generally require specific programs that tend to be made for Windows) either laptop is fine (whatever you are comfortable with).

As for cell carriers-- Verizon and AT&T are the two most popular carriers. I have AT&T and get, in my opinion, the best service on campus, even underground.

None of the dorms except the new Nordy dorm have wifi in the rooms, all the dorm rooms will require an ethernet cable. Common Areas like dining halls, classrooms, and grassy areas all have wifi.

I called the university today and they said that WiFi would be available in all the dorm rooms starting in the fall semester. Anyone else have confirmation of this?

It won’t make a difference unless you’re doing CS or CoE, in which case a Mac is arguably better because it’s operating system is *NIX based. That being said I use Windows for work and school and haven’t had a problem except with running Rails and Node, so if you want to develop with those two be careful with windows (or you can run a Linux VM).

So we just attended Pitt Start and they confirmed WiFi in the dorms by the fall. Also, they said Parallels would be available for free to run Windows on a Mac

Thanks BBDad57 - that is good news about parallels too. I am currently running Virtualbox at www.virtualbox.org and it runs well and is free.

Look, pc is more customizable, more useful and afordable … mac has a better design though… but thats all about it… also if you want to use it for programming, both are good, but if you use linux, it is awesome… I dont know whether you are asking only about the os, but still the linux part stands :)
