sorry about that guitarshark... i meant macs are for multimedia including gaming. multimedia includes imovie, itunes, etc. i dont have a mac but thats what my friends tells me its good for

aw, gotcha

lol. actually, up until very recently, PCs were virtually always preferred for games:
(1) all games run on windows, some run on mac
(2) user-upgradeable video cards
(3) better video cards
(4) they can be custom-built

today, PCs are still the best for gaming (especially if you built the computer yourself).

where macs are useful is in entertainment and graphics design (not gaming). this means imovie, final cut pro, adobe photoshop, indesign, 3D rendering, etc.

dude i would never go mac for games....as far as i know PC's still own the mac in pure gaming power and market resources. for laptop's, macs are number one, and def for graphics stuff.....i built my PC :-d which im gaming...also im probably going to buy a laptop (powerbook 15") later this summer

Theres no reason to wait for the intel processor to buy a mac. For one the universal binary will allow for effortless support of the powerpc architechture for years to come and with the high resale value retained by macintosh computers if you really want to switch to an intel powered mac you will have the option to do so at only a small cost. If you need a computer now and want a mac go for it, its the runs the best operating system currently available.

anyone thinking about buying some apple stock?

anyone thinking about buying apple stock?

I'm pretty sure that there are going to be glitches and bugs with the first production macs with the Intel CPUs, so it may not be best to wait for one of those new machines. If you can wait longer, then wait a few months to allow Apple to fix any bugs with the early Intel models, then buy yourself one.

Of course, now is also a good time to buy one of the G4 notebooks or G5 desktops.

Why is now a good time to get one of those "older" systems? I haven't seen any significant price drops.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking of prices. Of course, I assume those will drop around the end of this year. I just meant that you can buy an "older" system now and still be happy; not that the G4 and G5 are useless now that Apple is switching to Intel.

I found this post I made from an old thread back in December:

Both Mac and PCs have their strong spots and weak spots.

Mac advantage
-Reliable OS
-FAST, regardless of processor
-Apple's products are very durable, and quality is high.
-Easier to use and configure, especially for the beginning or novice user

Mac disadvantage
-Not too many programs available. (But for most uses there is some program)
-Only one manufacturer: Apple
-Somewhat pricey

PC advantage
-Much much more common and widely used
-More choices and Manufacturers for actual machines
-MUCH MORE SOFTWARE! Literally gazillions available.
-Cheap

PC disadvantage
-Windows is unreliable and tends to crash often
-Regardless of processor, PCs can run quite slow. (And down the road as software gets updated, your PC will become outdated)
-Many PC manufacturers make poor quality products (NOT ALL, though) and many of them have poor warranty support.
-Windows is certainly complex to configure. You definitely might want to keep a copy of "Windows XP for Dummies" at hand.

About manufacturers, IBM is known to make the best PC laptops. For a fact, the majority of Fortune 500 companies buy IBM laptops. So do check out IBM first (http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId=2035724)
HP, Dell, Gateway, and Toshiba are all average. They all have high points and low points. You will have to check each one out and see if they suit you or not.
(I can tell you that one major problem with Dell is their support. If you ever have to call them about a problem, you better be ready to deal with people in India who aren't fluent in English.) (No offense to Indians on this board; I happen to be one myself)
Whatever you do, NEVER EVER buy Compaq. Even though they are owned by HP, Compaq branded PCs are absolute BS. Trust me, I speak from recent experience.

So it's up to you what you want. Incognita, your dream laptop is possible as both a Mac (iBook G4 12") or as a PC (Dell Inspiron 600m or 700m; HP dv1000 or ze4900; Gateway M210, M320, M405 or M450; IBM R series)

If you want a PC, then my favorite place to shop for one is Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact....talog=32&DEPA=3). If you want Apple, obviously it's the Apple store (If you have already been accepted to a University, then you can click this link http://store.apple.com/1-800-780-50...l?type=higherEd to get special discounts)

BTW, if you want some good discounts, do check out www.techbargains.com. It is constantly updated with different coupons, deals, etc.

Good Luck

All right, this is what you do. You buy a Mac Desktop, or you buy a PC Laptop. Mac's still have the G4 in their laptops :(

You should also install linux you your computer, this way you dont get any viruses or spyware. Linux is also free, and all programs for linux are free.

It also looks really good, check out my screenshot (I wanted it to look like a mac, but its still linux): http://virusorcancer.com/snap3.jpg ;) Nice Wallpaper eh?

You should also try to get a 64 bit processor, and get the 64 bit windows of the OS you will have. Linux and Windows both have 64 bith versions.

Oh, and if you want to buy a PC, check out http://alienware.com/ they have the best computers and laptops

That's not true. Linux is not always free (as in beer). And the programs for Linux are definitely not all free. The developers have to survive.

There are many good PC manufacturers -- for example, if you're looking for a good value, alienware isn't the place to go.
