Are you trying to set up the account with Mail, the postage stamp icon on the tool bar?
At most you need 4 pieces of information, the email address, the password, the incoming server email address and the outgoing server email address.
Mail should walk you through the steps very easily.
Hi - the college where they’re attending would have the information about the server. Oftentimes it’s on their webpage and they also may well have a computing help line that you could call. Try searching the name of the school and computer help desk. You will need to know your username, email address, password and the incoming/outgoing server information as BatesParent2019 above mentions. It’s also very possible they have some sort of webmail so you could just go to a webpage and login without needing to setup the Mail program to access.
It sounds like you’re not an experienced user. If that’s the case, calling the help desk sounds like the way to go. They can walk you through settings. Good luck!
