I apologize for this very simplistic question, but I don’t use a laptop. My son has one and his email has been .gmail.
When he starts college he will have an email that ends in .edu
Will both of those show up in his mailbox, or does he actually have to go the the schools website and open his .edu email that way? Or does he have to delete the gmail account on the laptop and then somehow “connect” the .edu to his laptop to show up in his mailbox?
Both of us aren’t very good with setting up stuff or understanding technology. I know… you would think all 18 year olds are, but he’s not good at figuring things out himself like this.
It’s not hard (even for technophobes) to add an account to Apple’s mail reader so that both of his accounts show up there. If you can’t figure it out and live near an Apple store, they’ll help with this. I suspect his school’s IT department would also help.
Thanks. I’m not sure how he set up his email program, I’m sure his Dad helped him when he got it. I know he doesn’t sign into the Gmail webpage…so he must have an Apple Mail program?
He also received the gmail account on his phone.
We do live near an Apple Store, just thought it would be easier to set up on our own if I understood whether he indeed could have both accounts come through on one place (his phone and laptop). He thinks that would be confusing.
Sounds like he just has to set up a second account in Mail. It is the same process. It takes 5 minutes. You enter the email address and password and then Mail interfaces with the schools email server.
You will see an icon on the tool bar it looks like a postage stamp.
Open it and look at the drop down menus for new account set up. On his phone just use the mail app and do the same thing.
The other thing you can do is have a duplicate copy of email from the school account sent to Gmail.
Thanks Bates…I have this written all down. He has to sign up for his school email Friday and all correspondence at that point from the school immediately goes to the .edu account instead of gmail. I also read somewhere that he can set it up so that when he open his email, he can see two different inboxes, instead of having one huge email inbox with both messages going into it. Maybe it automatically sets up like that, I don’t know.
My daughter gets mail from both personal and .edu accounts on both her iPhone and MacBook air. Setting up multiple accounts on an iPhone and iPad is really easy, presumably it’s the same for a MacBook.
If you also use an iPhone/iPad it can be handy to create a shared calendar and shared cloud photo album. That way you can both put stuff on the calendar that’s visible to everybody. I have my D put stuff like orientation and move-in dates on the shared calendar. And pics we want to share go into the cloud album.
Periwinkle, thanks for the link. anomander and Niquii77…do you see the multiple emails in one “inbox”, or do you have separate inboxes for each email account?
Well, I sort of changed directions with my last statement from email to directories…sorry. However, we did follow everyone’s instructions and got as far as the server. You have to pick a server…yahoo, Google, etc. I didn’t know so we chose “other”… But we just don’t know. Do we have to contact the university to find out their server to connect to receive .edu emails to his inbox?
