MacBook Pro: are they really worth it?

Please locate where I said that everyone needs an optical drive. Many people = everyone? I think this conversation is over.

If you maintain your laptop, any laptops will run great. I have a 8 working on 9 year old HP desktop at home. It has Intel Pentium 4 running at 1.xghz, 512mb ram, and a 40gb HDD. Sure it runs slow, but only because I haven’t upgraded the parts. I’m sure it’ll run nice if I upped the RAM to 2gb at least, and put in a new CPU or mobo. And possibly throw in another hard drive.

Only dumb people get viruses. With many companies offering antivirus, AVG, Avast, Microsoft Essentials, etc, you should know before hand if you’re downloading a virus or visiting a site known for hosting them. Then again, viruses are usually .exe files so you shouldn’t be running fishy files (“Oh what’s this? Never seen it before; let’s run it”). Or visit fishy websites, or opening attachments from unknown users. It’s not that hard to not get a virus. Just be smart.

Tell me how the layout of a Mac is different from any other PC. Are the keys laid out differently? Is your A key where my P key would be? I mean come on, have some reason in your claims! You’re essentially saying “This model works for me and I am unwilling to change.” Adapt! You cannot possibly think that you cannot go through life without change. If you cannot switch from loading your discs on the right(or left) side to the left(or right) side, you really need to get your head out of your you know what and learn to change.

Why are you forcing us to change? Many people who work in the film industry use both Windows and a Mac. Why? Because that’s what they are used to using to produce their best work. Adapting takes time, which is something not everyone has.

I’m not forcing anyone to change. I’m just pointing out the ridiculous arguments he brings to the table.

I understand if there’s a difference in the software, but he’s not talking about changing software. He’s talking about PHYSICAL LAYOUT. There is nothing different in the layouts of a keyboard. All the keys are in the same position on a Mac and a PC. The only differences are where each port is located and it does not take that long to locate and adapt.

@tr1p7s

first of all i’m not a he.
second, i have a PC so chill.
and i’m not talking about the keys, etc. but the layout of icons and whatnot on the screen.
sorry that i like macs!

You can make your PC look exactly like a Mac

if you really wanted your desktop to look like a mac, there are a plethora of videos and guides to show you how to do it. A simple google search for “how to make windows 7 look like osx” will give you this:

[YouTube - ‪Make your XP, Vista or Windows 7 look a little like Mac OS X Leopard (HD) (PART 1)‬‎](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaJ5v4tOFGE)

which shows you how to make your desktop look exactly like osx, even with the (IMO, stupid) dock that enlarges as you scroll over it.

I never had a mac. I want to try the OS. Which one should I get?

Go to an Apple store and play around with it. You don’t need to pay to try it.

Good point. But don’t you think it’s nice to have at least one Mac computer?

guys the answers i wanted to hear was more in lines with.

Q: Do you like macbook pros and would u recomend them? why?
if not, what kinds of alternatives would u recommend for a college student? why?

i didnt want a raging war between PCs and Macs.

Have you considered macbooks?
If you have a high budget ($1200) but you only need to do normal school work stuff (essays, videos, notes) then just get a macbook and use the rest of the money somewhere else.
Like a external monitor, keyboard, mouse

Or you can look at laptops linked in this thread and decide what you want/need and go from there.

What did you expect?

Any talk of Macs/Windows will bring up arguments. It’s just the nature of people. The proper approach would be to bring both types of sandwiches to the table, show their pros/cons, and let the OP decide for himself/herself what is best.

@detailmore
Go to an Apple store and try out what you like. If you wanted to own a Mac I would suggest the 13" MBP or the 15". Don’t buy the upgraded CPU 15" MBP, complete waste of $200. If you have the money get the i7, if not get the first option.

sorry tr1p7s I just like macs. i guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

Mac’s are soooo superior to windows. I mean, on Windows can people really have full keyboards that have lights on them? On a windows can you like use like a webcam? On windows i get viruses like OMG, and like on MAC i can edit videos and stuff with the click of a button! Also, like OMG Safari is like SOOOO much better than like Internet Explorer. AND ALSO OMG Macs are like SOOOOOO cute and shiny… Windows is like SOOOOO hard to use. IT’s SO HARD to install SKYPE!!! See as a Mac user i think we should all have our computers work for YEARS even though we can download bunch of naughty movies and expect our computers to be virus free! Opening spam? NO PROBLEM! On a MAC you can even type out your notes in class! AND ALL THIS FOR ONLY $1200. AND LIKE OMG YOU GET LIKE A PRINTER AND AN IPOD TOUCH! YAY

Do i make a good Mac cheerleader, my enlightened PC using bretheren?

I love how the PC fans on this topic try to portray Mac users as dumb, immature, and ignorant when they are showing themselves to be nothing but the same. Pot and kettle much?

I never said you are dumb, immature, or ignorant. But, if the shoe fits… = )

This exactly…
Seriously, I very much doubt the OP cares at all about any of this nonsense. It’s totally irrelevant to his decision.
p.s. xSidx1337x…oh, how I wish you hadn’t edited your post saying the UNC is a ****ty school that cried when FSU won…because it was the definition of being dumb & immature.

While I don’t agree with this comment or the Mac philosophy in general, I do bet that there are a lot of people out there who couldn’t differentiate the sarcastic undertone from the response from a real Mac fanboy. Then again, the PC fanboys are just as annoying T_T
