How is it using Macs at Cornell? Is the software on Macs compatible with the required software for Cornell?

80% of people use Macs…

There is no required software.

I’d second Saugus with about 80% of people having Macs. It’s definitely in the majority over PC users.

That surprises me a bit, to be honest. I’ve found macs to be irritating and difficult to use. Do you happen to know if the distribution is different in engineering than in the university as a whole? (I’m using a PC either way, I’m just curious).

I’d say the majority use Macs, but I wouldn’t go to 80%. Maybe it’s because I have some classes with engineers, or because I use a PC myself. Though there’s a fair number of engineers with macs too, my guess is that there a greater percentage of engineers are PC users than the percentage of Cornell students who use PCs. A lot of people I know in CS or electrical and computer engineering end up having both operating systems on the same machine anyways.

i graduated 2 years ago and Macs were on the rise since I started at Cornell in 2007. I think Engineers are maybe 50/50 PC vs. Mac, but most others use Mac. It really doesn’t make a difference and most students for their uses could get away with a Chromebook (I don’t think most go beyond web browsing and basic office functions). I have a Mac and made the switch a few years ago. I prefer the aesthetic of the interface. I have Windows 8 installed on my MBP and it’s absolutely a terrible user interface for a laptop, though I can see how it could work well for a tablet.
