Macs

Does anyone know whether new freshman Penn students get discounts on certain things, like Macs, iPhones, etc.? I know Apple used to do something for new college students.

I am probably getting a Origin laptop.

If you go into apple.com, you’ll see that students automatically get a discount with most participating institutions (yes, that would include Penn) and I think it’s like $150 off for a 13-inch MBP and $200 off for a 15-inch? I can’t recall the exact numbers but it’s tiered pricing. Also, if you wait until the summer, Apple does a buy a Macbook for college, get an iPod for free deal to clean out their old iPod inventory to prepare for the new models.

^Yes, I am also looked forward to those discounts. I think the deal is like $100 off a macbook with a free ipod touch. Well either way, I think it’s worth it to get a mac. When I visited during Penn Preview, I saw that nearly every student laptop was a Mac (I’m NOT exaggerating).

I think I’ll also be going with a Mac for college, though maybe a PC laptop, not sure yet at all.

FYI, almost everyone here has a mac. But say you want to buy a PC, there are open access Macs literally everywhere (and vice versa for mac owners). So it’s up to your own personal preference.

A bit off topic, but am I fine with my old laptop (5 years old) or should I get a new one? Its a macbook, and only had one problem these 5 years, I dropped it and had to replace the hard drive. That was probably three or four years ago, too. It’s not exactly the fastest thing now, though, but still good enough to get by. I feel as though I should replace it, but I don’t really have the money too if it’s not necessary.

If your computer works for you and you don’t want a new one, there’s really no reason to replace it. No one is going to fault or judge you for having an old computer.
