Made a huge mistake with my Commonapp additional recommender! :(

Hi everyone (I'm new lol)
So a few months ago I requested a rec from a professor at a research Centre (I've interned with him twice). He happily obliged and I submitted it under Stanford University. A while later, my counselor told me that if I'm done with my common app, I can simply send it to all my schools and send the writing supplement later. I did that and of course I sent the additional rec as well. Yesterday, I went to give my professor a hamper for Christmas and told him I had submitted his rec for a majority of my schools. He looked taken aback and told me he had specifically mentioned Stanford University at the beginning of the rec!
I've been beating myself up and I simply don't know whether I should contact the colleges or let it be! Will this affect my chances?! What should I do about it? It has been sent to places like Harvard and UPenn (Ivies basically).

I appreciate any comments on my situation. Thanks!

You don’t read your recs before you send them out? You can contact them and say that there was a mistake and that you sent them the wrong one. I’m sure they would understand. Why would they reject you just because you sent a letter of rec to the wrong school if you’re highly qualified? You’ll be fine don’t stress it too much.

Thankyou  @fallenwinter‌
I actually thought we weren’t allowed to read them :((

@Nik2012 If you agreed to the FERPA thing, then you are not allowed to read them! This isn’t your fault; it’s your recommender’s. I believe there are explicit instructions for recommenders NOT to tailor their letter to an individual school.

What you might try doing is having your recommender make an altered version of the letter (removing the mention of Stanford, obviously) and sending that in on paper. Either he could include a cover letter explaining the mix-up or you could contact them yourself. I don’t think not acknowledging the mistake is the best idea, though.

My professor has traveled for Christmas so I don’t think he will be able to do that. I think my best bet is to contact them.
Thank you!
