Maine Kids

I’m from Maine, and I got waitlisted at Bowdoin, as did my friend who has better scores than I do, a higher GPA (and mine is pretty high) and is the valedictorian. I’ve heard that being a Mainer can give you a slight edge since they apparently try to do right by us, but I’ve also heard that since Bowdoin is the best school in Maine, the creme de la creme of pretty much all Maine seniors apply and thus it’s harder for Mainers to get in.

What do you think is true?

My bet is that because Bowdoin has such a great reputation in Maine that proportionately more Maine students apply/ I would imagine that you are put in a pool with so many other Maine students; I would bet that there are still more students at Bowdoin from Maine than there are at lets say Amherst and Middlebury or Dartmouth…

Bowdoin tells us CONSTANTLY about their devotion to Mainers. It tends to be almost a slam dunk if you are valedictorian or salutatorian from a Maine high school (public or private) but only if you apply ED or EDII. Otherwise, they don’t take you for the smart Maine kid that grew up dreaming of going to Bowdoin and helping Maine… you were probably shooting for Dartmouth or Middlebury and are stuck looking at the no-loan school an hour from home.
