what does everyone know about chances of Maine students applying to bowdoin? is it harder than an out of state applicant? and what are averages for Maine students applying?

I am on here because I searched for something else and happened to see a Bowdoin-related thread to which I responded (and registered in order to do so.)

I graduated from Bowdoin in 1999, which may seem to you like a lifetime ago, but things are not significantly different now. I am from Maine, although my stats and background could compete with everyone else. But it was at the time well-known though rarely spoken that Bowdoin has a quota to meet for admission of Maine students. I suspect on average Maine students had slightly lower grades and scores than some other students. I don’t want to upset a bunch of Maine students… plenty are just as smart or much smarter than some non-Maine students. But, if anything, your Maine status will help you, not hurt you.

I’m applying from Maine.
My GPA is a 3.8
SAT I: 2170
SAT II: USHIS: 750 BIO:710 APLIT: 770
AP Tests: World History: 4 (APUSH, BIO, LIT coming soon, 4-5’s)

Not going to bother with EC’s, as you just want scores, right?

Also, does anyone know how much it will help, having a relative in the family as a graduate of Bowdoin? My dad went there, and Bowdoin is at the top of my college list.

ECs matter in your case since your GPA and SATs are ok but not great. You’re going to be competing against thousands of applicants with similar scores and grades so you probably should have some other hook. Your father being a Bowdoin grad will help a fair amount since that makes you a legacy but I do recall hearing somewhere that the legacy bump happens in the ED phase of the admissions process and is less help for a regular decision applicant…
