how much of a disadvantage is it to be a male from Maine applying to Bowdoin and Colby?

Not sure it’s really a disadvantage. If I recall correctly, Colby at least has had a goal of maintaining about 10% enrollment of Maine students. That percentage was dropping in recent years and was one reason the college initially offered no-loan financial aid packages to Maine students (later expanded to all students). Being from Massachusetts, on the other hand, could be a real disadvantage…

I heard somewhere that 70% of the applicants come from Massachusetts–puts MA kids at a disadvantage, for sure.

Being from California, Florida, North Carolina, and all of New England puts you at a disadvantage.

It all depends on how many people apply from where, i’m guessing. Since Colby is in Maine, there will definitely be more people applying from there than say Washington. You’ll be at a slight disadvantage, but like sailfish and MAdad said, there are certainly those worse off than you! I’m sure the same thing applies for Bowdoin.
