Does one's intended major affect his/her chances of acceptance?

For eg, will my chances be the same if i apply for psychology/economics(among the most popular majors) as compared to religion/philosophy(comparatively less popular majors)?

I would say major has relatively little effect because colleges know kids change their minds. But if there is a new program or a major that is especially strong at a school , that could be something good for "demonstrating interest" in what makes that school unique. Some people say that at a relatively science-oriented school like Johns Hopkins some preference is given to humaities or arts majors for reasons of diversity.

But naming a major in a small neglected department at a college just becasue it's "different" probably will have 0 effect on you app.

It depends. Performin arts majors effect their chances greatly because it's ALL (90%) about the audition. Unless you're going to an IVY, performin arts majors can get in anywhere with a great audition, even if they have 2.5's.
