I am a sophomore in high school and I’ve been thinking about college lately. I’ve always wanted to do something with musical theatre and for a few months now, I’ve been thinking of majoring in social work and minoring in musical theatre and after college, I would take about a year or two to focus on theatre but now that I think about it, musical theatre is my passion and honestly the only thing that I really love to do and I know I won’t get the full training experience if I minor in MT. So I’m thinking of majoring in musical theatre and minoring in social work or psychology. But I’m afraid that if I fail in theatre then I won’t even get a job in social work since it’s only a minor. Does anyone have any tips or information that I can use?
Here’s the thing about MT. Most schools that do offer MT (they’re few and far between) either don’t offer an MT minor or don’t let MT students have a minor. I’d suggest looking at schools that offer a BA in MT, not only a BFA. A BFA is going to be very rigorous and won’t leave much room for minors.
I’ve not done much digging here, but as @irk02 said, a BA in MT and either a minor (or double majoring) in psychology or sociology might be something you want to explore more.
In order to obtain a license in social work in most states, you need a Master’s degree (MSW) – so what you do in undergrad doesn’t necessarily lead directly to employment in that field. Lots of courses that would expose you to good faculty recommenders for grad school would be your best bet if you’re planning to major in a performing art. Students who major or minor in human development/family studies are great candidates for graduate work in social work. Good luck to you!
