Hi, I'm a prospie who is starting to really narrow down the college choices and I still have Wellesley as my top school.

Can any current Wellesley student tell me what they really don't like about Wellesley or one thing that they wished they prepared more beforehand before enrolling?

I’m not a current student, but I know recent alums and they’ve said that it’s not the best place if you’re set on going into hard science research and want a focus on that vs. a broader liberal arts education. It’s also sort of difficult to cross-register with schools in the city because it takes 30-60min on either end to get there/back.

But honestly I don’t think you should think about cons now. Wait until you’ve applied and been accepted and need to narrow down your choices. Until then, just be as excited as possible about all the schools you’re applying to.

My daughter has had fabulous research opportunities as a double major in astronomy and geosciences. She has worked quite closely with her advisor and also worked with a professor at MIT last summer.

Not having easy access to guys is a con of Wellesley. Sorry, have to say it like it is. I think Wellesley pitches the ease of socializing with guys at Harvard, MIT, other area colleges as easier than it really is. It takes a good deal of effort and this is a school where studies / academics are pretty intense.

It’s true that casual encounters with the opposite sex don’t happen. You have to work at it. Not impossible or unheard of, but not automatic. Wellesley has an odd Mon-Fri work week/Fri-Sat weekend social life vibe that is not common to many residential colleges. If you want a boyfriend, you’ll have to commute.

Another “con” is the stress level and intense atmosphere. It’s important to be able to detach from pressure and attain some ability to control stress and retain perspective. Perfectionists and students who need to get all As are going to have some trouble adjusting.

Wellesley is like boot camp. It hurts but you’re glad you did it.
