You could create your own major in college.
Your major does not have to encompass ALL of your interests. You can pick a few that you really want to dig into, and supplement by taking classes in other fields.
Sociology is a social science major that often concerns itself with social justice and human rights. There are also some interdisciplinary human rights majors at some colleges that would have you take classes across fields.
I think that Sociology, Art History and Psychology all have that same premise, they are just different in emphasis. It really just depends on how much you are looking to go to school, what type of work you want to be doing, and how financially successful you want to be right out of college.
For any branch of Psychology, do not pursue it unless you intend on completing your masters! You simply cannot compete in research or clinical psychology fields with an undergraduate.
Sociology is more broad and less difficult than obtaining a masters in Psychology, but doesn’t qualify you for a specific career out of college. You’ll really have to make sure you know what you want to do with your degree if you pursue this.
Art history is more humanities/history based than theoretical and scientific, which can be fun, but the average pay after graduation is much lower and there isn’t a clear career direction after grad.
I would recommend possibly a liberal arts degree, to which you can customize to your interests a bit and develop your knowledge of many concepts. Another very practical and useful degree is English, and although you don’t specifically take classes for those sort of topics, oftentimes they are subjects of research papers and it would qualify you to do very good work ( writing ) in all of those particular fields of interest.
No, but there are lots of other jobs in many other fields you can do with a bachelor’s degree in psychology other than research or clinical therapy. I wouldn’t say you can only major in psychology if you plan on getting a master’s.
I also don’t think you have to know what you want to do to major in the social sciences or the humanities. You do, however, need to be proactive about pursuing internships and learning in-demand skills (other languages? statistics? writing and communication? computer programming?) to make your job search post-college a bit smoother.
