My daughter filled in her first and second major choices. She's thinking she'd prefer the second. Does anyone know if they give you feedback on both?

They only give feedback on one of the choices. It will say what school she got into, and what major.

But what if you qualify for both? Is the first one listed considered to be your first choice? I guess you have to commit even before you find out. Thanks for any more insight you have into this!

What are the 2 majors?

The 2 majors are Textile College and Management.

My S, a NCSU sophomore applied and was accepted as a College of Engineering major in the fall of his senior year in h.s. Sometime in the spring of senior year, he decided that engineering was not for him. We called the admissions office and told them he wanted to switch to a different major. The admissions office handled it for us and he received a letter shortly thereafter welcoming him to the College of Natural Resources.
This was an easy switch for him because the College of Engineering is highly competitive and the college of Natural Resources has far fewer applicants.

In your case you are wanting to change from a college with fewer applicants (textiles) to one with many applicants (management). I would think you should get in touch with admissions as soon as possible and let them know she wants Management as her first choice. Management is a popular major so I think the sooner you make the switch, the better if she is sure this is what she wants to do.

Thanks. Fortunately, she is very happy with choosing textiles. We just wondered if she would have a choice based on the feedback she will get. It sounds like she won't. Glad it worked out well for your son. It seems like a great school.

tia3, yes, you're right. She will be admitted to the College of Textiles if that is her first choice on her app. NC State is somewhat unusual in that regard. A lot of colleges don't require that you declare a major until later. It is good in a way though because you can start in on the required courses during your freshman year. A girl who graduated from high school with my S is in the College of Textiles and she got a very nice scholarship. Be sure to search the College of Textiles home page for departmental scholarship opportunities. My S got a nice scholarship from his dept, that we never would have known about had we not stumbled upon it while reading the dept. homepage. My H went to NCSU also. If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them if I can.

What's the point in choosing two majors? If you don't get in the first they might put you in the second?

Yep, better chance of being accepted

Thanks Packmom. I just wish the application would move on from the Submitted category!

tia3, me too! My D. sent in application on Oct. 19th and it still says Submitted. I told her to call and check on things, but she refuses to call until it has been exactly 12 weeks. She is a transfer and needs to arrange apt housing starting in May, so would really like to know. Of course I assume if she doesn't get into major for some reason, she could take part-time classes?

yeah i applied nov.1 and it still says submitted - all depends on your intended major (some colleges at NCSU take longer to notify applicants)

best of luck

tia3, mkm56 and Pride,
2 things to consider 1) check with the webpage specific college you applied for to dig up thier app timetable. I believe most have their calender posted and 2) Most definately make the call to establish contact. In the college at NCSU which my S was accepted they definately were very aware of a students interest level as a result of direct communications. If you have specific and intelligent questions regarding the major or the dept go ahead and call the dean's office and ask to speak to the person responsible for that answer. If your really emboldened go ahead on down to the office. My S did so and the communications quickly evolved into 1st name basis chats before to long. They were very receptive and helpful.

hardnox,
thanx 4 the info
i'll check the website right now

-Josh

Thanks hardknox. I'll check the website and encourage D. to call--she is always so..."I hate to be a pest" type. Grrrr.

mkm56 - October? That's awful. I would be calling. You must have gone through a lot of phases waiting! Ugh! That is bad news to hear for me. My d. just applied last week!!

Thanks also, harknox. I can't find a thing on the website. I shouldn't be complaining. THat's for sure.

She is a transfer and I don't know if that slows things down? I couldn't find anything on the website for her dept. (zoology) regarding dates, etc. I will encourage her to call next week. She is planning on rooming with 2 girls who want to go ahead and lease apt--so I guess if she doesn't get into the major, she will just have to go part time and work. She actually is graduating in May with a BS from another school and wants to pick up another field at NC State. Though her present school is very small and I don't think she realizes how easily one can fall through the cracks at a large institution.

by the way, i applied on october 28th and am just now going under review. so don't worry, they didn't forget you.
