I am having a very tough time trying to choose a major or degree plan. I currently work in healthcare. I'd like to continue working within the medical industry but not necessarily anything clinical related. The only clinician type position I'd consider is Diagnostic Sonography; however, I'd still need my degree in something science related.

Other job positions I'd be interested in are Pharmaceutical or Medical Technology related.

I'd love to get some guidance here. Is there a more general broad degree like Biology or Health Science that may be a good fit for me? Should I not be stressing over this so much?

Any advice?

What specifically are you trying to do with a college degree? What is your current job, why is that not satisfying, and what do you want to change?

For a pharmaceutical career you’d probably want something like chem, biochem, or mol bio and then pharmacy school for a Pharm.D. Medical technology sounds like Biomedical engineering. Of course both of these require lots of school.

“Biomedical sciences” sounds like a degree you might like - it’s essentially biochem/physiology lite with an emphasis on medical applications. I don’t know if you want to do research but that would require an M.S. and preferably a Ph.D.

Specifically? That is the problem. I do not have a specific role in mind. Anything indirectly involving a person’s healthcare would be great. Meaning working for a pharmacuetical company (sales or otherwise), medical technology (surgical products/tools), … do you see where I’m going? A company indirectly providing healthcare rather than direct patient care. I MAY decide later to do something patient care related, so I’d hope to be able to obtain a degree that may be versitile just in case I decide to take that turn.

I’m pretty much undecided at this point, but pretty positive in the Health Science realm. I’m trying to make this decision now as I’m unsure whether to take Biology, Chemistry, or A&P.

Currently, I work for an OBGYN handling all Billing, Collections, AR, and office management. I enjoy what I do, but I don’t want to do this for the rest of my life. I’m looking for something more challenging and intriguing. I was self employed for 3 years (doing something completely different) and I could not handle the fluctuation of income month to month and year to year. With the economy AND the seasonal fluctuation, I was forced to return to what I used to do - this job - and school to get my degree!

Would you consider an undergraduate degree in healthcare administration? This would require courses in accounting, management, finance (core business courses), as well as classes in healthcare systems, possibly health economics/ policy, etc.

This could lead to management positions in a health care facility or large multispecialty practice. Your current experience in billing and general office management would be useful.
