Major in Acting

I was wondering if you need prior acting experience to major in acting in college. I'm about to be a senior in high school and i want to major in acting in college but i never really acted before or did any programs... also how hard is it to make it on TV or film?

Generally in college someone who wants to study acting majors in theatre (or “drama”). In BFA programs you do theatre-related work most of the time. In BA programs you do theatre-related work some of the time.

Most BA programs require no prior experience at all. Most BFA programs require you to audition for admission to the program; your chances of admission to a BFA program might not be too good if you have had no training or experience.

If you are applying to BA programs, you’ll want to study curricula closely to find programs with as much acting training as possible. Many programs devote a lot of time to other aspects of theatre.

It is quite difficult to “make it” in TV or film.

Also note that some BA programs do require an audition, and there are some BFA programs that do not. Looking at the curricula closely will help you get a sense of the breadth of training within a program.

Regardless of BFA or BA program almost all college theatre programs require courses in theatre history, dramatic literature, etc…

It’s going to depend on the school.

Some schools will require you to audition, and/or will interview you and/or look at your resume. This sort of process gives a huge advantage to people who already have extensive acting experience and training.

Some places, however, base their admissions decisions on different requirements.

Since you now know what you want to do, you can devote your senior year to getting as much acting experience and training as you can. Some people, if they find they don’t get admitted to the sort of program they wanted, will take a year off after high school to improve their skills so they can audition and apply again.

It is VERY HARD to make it in TV or film. Because there are so few jobs compared with the number of people who want them. The people who succeed in TV and film are people who have devoted themselves completely to their career.
