Can I go for a Theatre Arts major with no previous experience?

I've been interested in theatre for a while as I really love dancing. Also, I'm really curious as to what goes behind-the-scenes at the theatre.

I'm homeschooled in a foreign country so I was unfortunately given no opportunity to try out theatre. Maybe I could've done stuff in the native tongue (I'm fluent), but it's really hard to find theatre stuff in a country where the arts are looked down on.

So anyway, could I try out a theatre major with absolutely no experience?

Yes you can, dancingwriter. BA theatre programs are for everyone. BFA programs, on the other hand, require an audition; this could be challenging for someone without much training or experience.

Programs vary, so check out the curricula of various programs to see how they jibe with your interests. Some have more emphasis on performance and others have more emphasis on theory, etc.

However, if you are an exceptional dancer, you could do a dance audition for a program such as Pace University which has a dance BFA that includes acting training or you could be a creative writing major with a minor in the commercial dance program which I believe includes some acting training but exposure to a lot of theatre opportunities. The BA there is also an unusual auditioned program which seems to attract people with a lot of theatre experience in acting, production and directing. Many schools have BA programs where theatre opporutnities are open to non majors. If you would go this route, its probably best to not go to a program that also has a BFA in theatre because those students would have priority for these opporutnities.

Thanks for the information, NJTheatreMOM and mom2gals! I guess I’ll look into the BA programs.

And in the meantime do explore theatre opportunities in the country where you are. It certainly won’t hurt to get some experience in any language.

You can always try out for anything, local theatre, an educational program, whatever. What do you have to lose?
