Hello all. My question is this. I am applying for the UC's in 2011 but I don't know if I should apply for the chemical engineering major or biochemistry major as I am similarly interested in both majors. I will finish my pre-reqs by spring of 2012 and I am hoping to raise my GPA to 3.75 by then. By going into biochemistry I could possibly finish in a year and save money but if I get accepted into chemical engineering, I would have to take 2 years to finish the upper-division coursework. I intend to pursue either medical or pharmacy school after receiving my bachelor's.

if you’re into medicine choose the major that is easier, granted you chose pretty much the two hardest majors you can pick.

Med schools look at GPA and MCAT’s… you use very little or none of your undergraduate studies in med school. If I were you I would major in public health or some easier major that is still related to the medicine field but is much more doable than the majors you chose.

If you insisted on picking between those two, I would say biochem for med school. If you’re not sure about med school than do chem engineering (great pay and job’s won’t be hard to find)

Yea I figured I did but the thing is that these too majors are the only ones that seem to have caught my interest. I understand they will be difficult and I am keeping the option open to pursuing a masters in either one.

Biochem would prepare you well for pharmacy and med school. Otherwise you’d have to take a few classes outside of the normal chem e curriculum (e.g., molecular bio, but that depends on various admission criteria).
