biochemistry transfer student to chemical engineering masters?

hi all,

I am about to transfer from a CCC to a UC (still deciding between UCB, UCLA,& UCSD) to study biochemistry/chemistry. I really like my major, but I'm somewhat disappointed by the poor career prospects that this major will offer me. My plan is to finish my undergrad, and then pursue my masters in Chemical Engineering. But if I choose to do this, it seems like I am wasting my next two years taking biochemistry classes for no reason. I don't get any financial aid, so wasting two years taking classes that will not be relevant for my career is a depressing thought. My question is:

Should I stay in community college one more year to finish the chemical engineering prereqs and then reapply to a UC for this new major? Or should I stick to biochemistry and do a chemical engineering masters?

How likely is it that I will be accepted into a chemical engineering graduate program without any engineering background?

Thanks all!

if anyone has alternative solutions to what I have suggested, Id like to knwo that as well.

You’d probably have to make up some basic requirements before actually moving on to the graduate courses, so I’m not sure whether it’s a wise choice as far as finances go. Look for entrance requirements for graduate ChemE programs.

I think staying another year and applying as ChemE is a better decision, although I’m cautious in suggesting that because while you seem to enjoy biochemistry, it’s not certain how much you’ll enjoy ChemE.
