Major in math?

<p>I’m trying to decide between American, SUNY Geneseo, and SUNY Potsdam. I received the 25k scholarship from american( honors program), 2k from geneseo, and 5k from potsdam(honors program), making potsdam cheapest, then geneseo, then american, with american costing about 4k more than geneseo. I think I want to major in math, and though American isn’t well known for their math program, my councelor talked to the head of the math department, and was very impressed with the program. Apparently their graduating class in math is very strong every year because they are small and grow close to eachother and the profs. they are all pulled right into grad schools or employment through connections from either DC or the profs. I like the idea of living in DC, but i also like the idea of graduating without any debt from either geneseo or potsdam, since i’m from NY. Geneseo is seen as one of the best SUNY schools (and is really pretty and nice, and i love the town), and though Potsdam isn’t high ranked, they also have an extremely strong math program. what also is cool about potsdam is that they have a masters in four program, so along with being the cheapest i could graduate with my masters and bachelors degrees in four years (assuming i’m accepted into the program, which might not happen). So basically there are reasons for going to any of these, adn to not go to any of these. Anyone have any awesome advice that will sway me any direction?</p>

<p>btw, geneseo is only about half and hour from where i live, and i’ll know a lot of people going there (including one of my very good friends). We also have a cottage on a nearby lake so we live there in the summer, and I know the town/area very well. potsdam is 4 hours away, and i’ll know a few older kids, and american is about 7 hours away and i’ll know no one.</p>

<p>I don't know much about any of the SUNY schools, so I won't profess to make any commentary about them. </p>

<p>AU's specialty is definitely not the mathematics program, but the advantage of the small program makes sense. You could get the academic environment of a LAC with the social environment of a metropolis like DC.</p>

<p>All of your schools are very similar financially. Do yourself a favor and don't consider finances at all at this point. You're not going to be significantly affected later in life by such a small amount of debt. </p>

<p>Just decide whether you really want to stay near home or go a great big city and meet a whole host of new people. AU also has great study abroad programs that the SUNYs might not have.</p>
