Is anyone going to major in microbiology and try to get into the dental school? If so, what courses are you planning to register for during Preview?
I don't know if I should follow the guideline that UF has on their website--because it says I should take:

First Semester:
CHM 2045 and 2045L General Chemistry 1 (3) and Laboratory (1) (GE-P)
MAC 1147 Precalculus: Algebra and Trigonometry (GE-M) (required for MAC 2311 in the spring)
Composition/Writing (ENC 1101 recommended) (GE-C, WR)
Humanities (GE-H, N)

but I have the credits for humanities and english (from ap scores) and maybe calculus AB (MAC 2311)

Most predent people I know take the easy route and major in Nutrition. With micro, you will take some class that could potentially lower your gpa. But its up to you what you like.

know quite a few people who majored in either micro and nutrition and they were admitted into dental school. and like ASMAJ said, a lot of pre dents end up switching from micro to nutrition (because it is "easier" for them).

if you have the credits for humanities and english try taking higher level english courses- dental schools just want to see that youre a competent writer and proficient in english. Try taking Writing in the Pre-health professions or something along those lines. My advisors basically say anything with a ENC or LIT prefix would suffice and also some philosophy courses. btw, the humanities are for the general education requirements (UF undergrad)- not for dental school. Although, if you have not taken general psychology at the AP level (social science) do take it as many schools requirement or STRONGLY suggest it.

Also, if you have that credit for calculus I would look up the certain dental schools youre thinking of applying to and seeing if they would accept the AP credit. Or, if you feel comfortable enough in calc just take the calc class and skip pre-cal.

this is my advice, while youre at preview see if you can talk to a pre-health advisor and ask them their opinion on the courses youre planning on taking. They'll usually steer you in the right direction.

okay thanks! I know about the Nutrition thing; I'd rather major in microbiology.
I have a question about the advisors though. I've heard that they don't really help much, is that true?

well depends on your advisor. All the ones Ive talked to have been pretty good, they know their stuff.

The pre-health advisors are pretty knowledgable (imo). Jeffrey Morales is really nice, hes the 1st and 2nd year prehealth advisor. Try seeing him sometime during your first semester if you have any questions.
