Major/Minor and Languages

hi! sorry if i should already know the answers to these questions but i need some help. do your major/minor have to be related. say if i want to major in education but minor in linguistics, language studies, or a foreign language… could that be done? also, if i want to minor in anything having to do with languages, how many years of a high school language would i need to have?

You can major and minor (our double major) in unrelated subjects, so you can combine language study with almost anything. Most universities actually encourage this. Also, you can start a new language from the beginning in college – you do not need to have any background in the language you want to study.

Some people study more than one language in college, for example, major in one and minor in another. Others combine such diverse degrees as engineering and language. You should plan on studying abroad to get more fluent and learn the culture of a place where the language is spoken.

Some universities have much stronger language programs than others, offering obscure European languages, Middle Eastern and Asian languages, African languages, and even Native American languages, but almost all universities will offer the basics of Spanish and French and possibly German. If you have an idea of what languages you want to study, then that may dictate what colleges you apply to.

Thank you so much! so it would be ideal to do that if i wanted to become a teacher, or possibly teach english in another country?

Yes, that would be ideal.
