OVERVIEW: I don’t know what to major in, but I know what I want to do. (Stated at the bottom.) I’d strongly appreciate any info you can give as well as suggestions
In previous years, I’ve longed to be a doctor or a lawyer. But then I realized that’s not what I want. What I want is for my life to be happy and meaningful.
The only thing that makes me happy is helping people. By that, I mean helping those who need it the most. Whether it’s building homes for the poor, or fundraising for education. I love volunteering with organizations like treepeople or heal the bay
Even food banks.
Are there any majors that I can purse that involve this general field? Also any suggestions are appreciated.
Do you have to declare a major right away or can you explore some courses first? If you’re not too sure about what field to study then knock out those general ed requirements first and see if any of them interest you. Many colleges won’t make you declare a major until your second or third year.
The types of work you want to go into are very broad so it’d be hard for anyone on here to give a specific ideas. Helping people can be accomplished by almost any major, it just depends on HOW you want to help people most.
You could study education and work in disadvantaged school districts to help kids achieve their best, you could study psychology and become a social worker, you could study urban development and work on affordable housing solutions and city layouts to promote equal opportunity across income levels. Really almost any major can be leveraged to help people.
You could work in nonprofits (lots of different jobs help people: managing a nonprofit is a tough job, for instance, and some schools specialize in that concentration.)
You could study anything you like alongside Spanish or another language spoken by immigrants, and apply to TFA to teach in high-need districts - you’d need to be at a college where TFA recruits but with a bilingual certification you’d be highly needed regardless of major.
You could study anything + French or Arabic or Swahili and join the Peace Corps (some colleges have the Peace-Corps “prep” program, such as St Michael’s, Truman State, or Ohio U. http://www.peacecorps.gov/volunteer/university/pcprep/partners/)
No matter what you major in, take one class in statistics or applied statistics.
