Major Pre-Requisites (aimed mainly at UCLA)

Due to the unfortunate decisions by the UCLA's admissions, I was rejected from their DESMA program which is insanely difficult to get into (they paired it to Harvard's 6~7% acceptance rate at the arts meeting). I'm planning to transfer, however the schools in my area (4 in the district) do not have all the required classes for their pre-requisite. In actuality, I believe that if I went to a UC for two years THEN transferred, I'd have so much of a higher chance. I received an automated email asking the same thing to an admissions rep and they said that depending on the completion of the pre-reqs for your major, it makes you less or more competitive depending on how many you have done. I believe it but, honestly, do you really want me to transfer all the way down to LA to get classes? As of now, I know of two cc's that have some of the courses needed for transfer. Yet another problem is I talked to yet another representative who told me that some of the courses that are UC transferable, and do match the course description of what's on the UCLA catalog, MAY NOT BE TRANSFERABLE.

So my question is, for those who were either rejected by UCLA because you lacked pre-reqs, do you think it's mainly from IGETC/GE or your major pre-reqs that you were rejcted?

What did you do to explain the situation about the lack of those courses at your college?

Thank you so much in advance!

usually you will not be penalized for missing a pre-req that your cc lacks. I don’t have too much knowledge regarding the DESMA program but I would say IGETC reqs are more important than your major pre-reqs.

Have you tried calling UCLA? they give you a reason for your denial.

I would say have all your GE’s completed if you aren’t able to complete all the pre-reqs. I don’t know too much on UCLA as I never really researched it nor applied. I can tell you that I was accepted to Berkeley and I had 0/3 major pre-reqs completed. My CC didn’t offer them, or any CC within a decent distance for that matter. (I just said that in my application). The thing you have to acknowledge is that if you’re having trouble finding transferable classes, then many applying probably are as well. It’s probably the fact I had my GE’s completed and personal statement that got me in. It might be a little bit different with DESMA and UCLA however as I have 0 knowledge on them.

@stephan91 - I can pretty much say that although DESMA looks mainly at your portfolio, your GPA and SAT scores come into play sometime there. So I blame it on that. THAT, and I had only decided I wanted to major in design before I applied there so my portfolio was subpar since other students had plenty of time to work on theirs. I had about a semester.

@jdom24 - Thank you for the information. The pre-reqs for DESMA ask for 11 courses… 2-3 of which are offered around the campuses. There is one or two still lying around but they’re CSU transferable only. I’m waitlisted for Davis but if I get off the waitlist, I’m planning to go just so I can transfer to UCLA afterwards. After all, they consider both CC and UC transfer students equals. There is a college in Torrance, CA near Compton (go figure why I won’t go) that has practically all the courses they want and they’re all UC-transferable. So if at all necessary, I’ll be looking into those. Hopefully I won’t have to if my appeal goes through.
