Major Related Extracurriculars

Hey guys! Since extracurriculars are huge part of high school, I thought I’d start a discussion about what are major related, but interesting and unique extracurriculars. For instance, I know many of us would love to go to an Ivy League school. I hope to study environmental science. So what extracurriculars would help this pursuit?

Do you guys have an Environmental Club? My school’s club cleans up the campus and does fundraisers for things related to saving the planet. What about Science Olympiad? Science Honor Society?

Since I’m interested in journalism and film as possible majors, I’m on my school’s newspaper staff (not technically an EC since it is a class but the work can carry on after school and the photography definitely is) as well as in my school’s film club. I think those are my only EC’s related to what I might want to study.

Look for local biology centers to volunteer at, research, intern at ect. I know some towns don’t have many opportunities like that but thats what I would recommend.

Haha, I pretty much have no ECs related to my prospective major (I’m probably going to double-major in Planetary Science (or Geology, depending on what the school offers) and Computer Science); all of mine are humanities/performing arts based (MUN, literary magazine, writing, colorguard). I’m part of my school’s Biotech club (somewhat ironic, since I’m not even going to take AP Bio) and I teach math and science to elementary school kids once in a while, but that’s about it. To be honest, the only things I can do at my school are robotics (a filler EC unless you’re on a really good team), Science Olympiad (which I couldn’t do because competition dates conflicted with winterguard competitions), Science Bowl (almost impossible to get into–the only people who got in this year had tried last year as well), or Ocean Science Bowl (um…). There are various clubs that don’t really do anything, but honestly, I’d rather not waste my lunches on them.
