Major Switch

I Was wondering what your thoughts were on switchin intended majors after already being accepted to a school. I have always been an A student, so my passions are not prominent in my grades because I typically do well even if I loathe the subject. My passion has always been for writing, but I have put this on the backburner due to the field's shaky atmosphere. I currently put my major as pre-dentistry, which would not make me miserable because science does not bother me in the least, though I have always preferred a more artistic approach to learning. I was looking and found tht communications offers degrees for occupations that give adequate salaries, I am not in it for the money though. This is a big jump between majors and I was wondering what potential damage this could cause to my standing in the eyes of my prospective colleges. Thanks!

In most cases, don’t think it matters. At one school’s information session, they said that about 40% of people who come in with a major end up changing it. College is meant to be a time of exploration. The only time it would matter right now is if it means that you have to apply to another school of the college. Then you need to tell the school so you are accepted into the right division. In many schools communications is a major, but some schools have a separate School of Communications (I think at Syracuse, Northwestern, BU and more I’m guessing) which may have different standards for admittance from the rest of the school. In those cases I suggest you contact the school if you applied already and let them know. That is just my guess. I’d also ask your guidance counselor and get his/her opinion.
