Majoring in anthropology on a pre-med track

Which colleges should I look at? Currently I'm really into JHU and Brown. I want a school with LOTS of research/work/volunteering opportunities and connections.

The risk with doing anthropology is that it may not give you the math/chemistry/physics skills necessary for you to succeed on something like the MCAT where you will be competing against Life Science majors who have studied these things for several years.

Are you are doing Anthropology because the courses are generally easier and you are hoping that this will mean a high gpa?

I’m doing something similar. I want to major in Classics while taking the pre med requisites. Is this something bad to do?

It can be good for getting good grades, but it can put you at a disadvantage when taking the MCAT because the students you have been competing against have been studying bio/chem/physics for several years already on top of the MCAT prep they have done. If you got this route you have to make sure you still know your math and sciences inside out before your write the MCAT so you can compete.

It is fine. As long as you can manage your schedule. It is more common than many think, not to actually major in a stem field. Many say the honed reading and thinking skills are a benefit.

Recent young friend just grad’d as an anthro major from H- and no one who knows her doubts she will got into a top med program. (But she has done far more than simply manage the academics.)

ps. seriously: people don’t major in anthro because it is easy.

A pre-med student can major in virtually any arts & science or engineering field, as long as you cover the core courses that med schools expect. Here is a list of those core corses from a UPenn Career Services page:

Biology (2 semesters of lecture and lab)
General Chemistry (2 semesters of lecture and lab)
Organic Chemistry (2 semesters of lecture and lab)
Physics (2 semesters of lecture and lab)
English/Writing (2 semesters)
Mathematics (2 semesters)
Biochemistry (1 semester)

From the Harvard Medical School “Requirements for Admission” page:

https://www.aamc.org/download/321496/data/2012factstable18.pdf</a> indicates that about half of applicants and matriculants to US medical schools have bachelor’s degrees in something other than biology. Social studies majors appear to have a slightly higher matriculant/applicant ratio than biology majors. Of course, many pre-meds, regardless of major, give up and don’t apply after getting GPAs or MCAT scores that are too low to have a realistic chance of admission.

Other selective universities with highly-regarded anthropology programs (based on NRC rankings):

Berkeley
Chicago
Duke
Michigan
Northwestern
NYU
Stanford
UCLA
U Penn
WUSTL
Yale

These schools have different strengths in archaeological v. biological v. cultural v. linguistic anthropology. Look up posts by warblersrule for more information.

You might want to look into Emory. Because it’s located right next to the CDC, its anthropology program places a heavier than average focus on health related anthropology (can’t remember the proper term for the discipline), and research opportunities abound.

Beloit is typically cited as one of the LACs strongest in anthropology.

Thanks guys. I want to major in anthro because I’ve always been curious about diversity and culture and that sort of thing, and I think that an anthropology background will help me understand patients better when I am a doctor.

I will definitely look into all the schools you provided for me, but why isn’t jhu on the list? I’ve always dreamt of going there.

That is actually what you should be doing. Did you know that of music majors who apply to medical school vs biology major, the music majors have a higher percent that get in?

I think Anthropology will be excellent!!
