Anthropology or Political Science majors for Pre-Med?

Are those majors uncommon for pre med? Do they have good acceptance rates and still fare well on the MCAT?

There are no correlations between med school acceptance and the major you picked. The correlation lies entirely with how you did in your courses overall, that you still completed the courses all med schools require (General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Calculus (often), English, Bio, sometimes a couple of others are favorable, like Physics, Biochem, Stats, but usually not required), and that you can write a decent essay, etc. In some ways not unlike getting into undergrad. As far as doing well on the MCAT, that is also generally major unrelated, although I suppose a chem major is bound to be less rusty when it comes time to take the MCAT. On the other hand, I am sure all aspiring premeds study enough before that this is not so much of a factor.

Bottom line, major in what you enjoy, make sure you take the premed requirements plus maybe an extra, and have a great time at Tulane.

If it makes you feel any better, Helvetica, I’m leaning toward majoring (or double majoring) in anthropology or public health, and I intend to go to medical school. At the urging of my advisor I’m attempting the creative premedical scholars track: getting med school prereqs completed before junior year and majoring in something other than a science. You might want to look into that too. And I echo what fallenchemist said: major in what you enjoy! Just because you want to be a doctor doesn’t mean you should feel like you have to major in a straitlaced science.
