After graduation, i'm looking to go into a career in publishing (book publishing, as an editor if that makes a difference) and my GC told me to look into double majoring in english and communication or to look for a school that has a publishing program. Does anyone know of schools that fit either of those criteria and are located somewhere in the mid-atlantic/ new england states? Thanks.

As a twenty year veteran of book publishing, I’d advise you to major in English/History and minor in subjects that truly interest you. There are graduate publishing programs but they are not particularly respected within the industry. Most editorial assistants at the major houses attended “prestigious” colleges and had a history of internships at publishing house or literary agencies. Journalism/ creative writing background can be helpful. I wouldn’t recommend a communications major, at least not for book publishing.

Ecossaise,
Thank you so much for your reply! I just have few quick questions:
(1) I understand the English Major you recommended perfectly, i was just wondering what was so special about history.
(2) You said graduate programs aren’t particularly respected, but what about undergraduate programs, like the program at Emmerson? Is it worth it go that route or is is it more beneficial to take the tradational college route?
(3) You mentioned a background in creative writing/ journalism. Would you recommend either of them as minors, or as a major, or just as background idea for interships?

Columbia, Penn, Haverford, all the Ivies and 7 Sisters

Oh and also UGA. They are a very good school that has a publishing major.
