I was recently admitted to PSU and I need some advice. I am interested in majoring in one of the life sciences like Biology, but also a math-science like Environmental Engineering, and I just wanted to know how are the Engineering and Science Departments are at PSU. Are they hands on/off? Do professors actually give you individual attention when needed? Any advice will be appreciated. Also, what are these, "controlled" majors about?

Your going to have a mix of both “hands-on” experimental courses and pure lecture courses. In both cases however, the level of the prof giving you attention depends on you. The prof will not seek out every individual person and express interest in them, you have to take the initiative and seek him/her out. All the profs also hold office hours where you can go in and get to know him/her and seek help if need be.

Controlled majors have limits to how many students each year can declare them. You don’t have to worry about them now as an incoming freshmen as you are just admitted as a pre-major status in your college of choice. When you declare your major end of soph year, each college will review your record thus far (classes taken, GPA) and then make a decision whether or not to admit you in their major.

Some of the majors simply require a few prereq classes and a certain GPA (like 2.0). There are some majors (the more competitive, popular ones) that require much higher GPAs and only accept a specific # of students each year.

Thank you! That was extremely helpful!
