I would like to become a commercial airline pilot. What majors other than Aerospace engineering would be helpful? Also what colleges offer good programs in aviation? Thanks

Airlines don’t care what your major is as long as you have a BS. That said, I would be most comfortable with an engineer piloting. ;-)

Yeah, airlines don’t care. Your major is completely irrelevant to how good of a pilot you are. Do what ever you want.

Aviation is the best - it is purpose built for what you want to do. The best program I know is Embry-Riddle’s BS in Aeronautical Science, but North Dakota is right up there (and offers a helicopter program!). Unfortunately, a few programs have gone the way of UIUC Aviation and been closed.

After Aviation you have aerospace engineering, followed by either of electrical or mechanical, but these degree will NOT teach you to fly and WILL give you a bunch of things you will not need as a professional pilot - you will need private flight school in addition to your degree to be competitive with the airlines, and they will have to invest more in your training.

Here’s a list of schools with aviation programs:

For some reason, it omitted Ohio State: [Department of Aviation - The Ohio State University](http://aviation.osu.edu/)

I’ve heard Purdue is good. It must be since it sent Neil Armstrong into NASA…
