Majors in need and heavy on statistics?

I'm a senior and last year I took AP Statistics and love love LOVED it (got a 5 too :)). Loved it so much I'm dual-enrolling at a local college to take Stats II. By far my favorite class ever.

With that said, I want to go into a major that uses statistics and could travel well. I'm in Tennessee now but I want to move. New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Europe, the sky is the limit. Heck, I've always wanted to buy a sailboat and live on it instead of a home/apartment. And good pay doesn't hurt either. :)

I'm thinking Accounting or Actuarial Science. Any other ideas? I know a lot of accounting, my mom just graduated from community college with a Associates in Accounting (required to get one by her job) and I did some of her homework and helped her study. I still help her work out spreadsheets in return for her paying for my gas when I don't feel like it. :p If I did accounting, I'd probably want to do auditing, something where your data is more useful.

Actuary...ing sounds like an interesting job. I love the risk and deeper intellectual work involved. I don't know a whole bunch about it, but what I do know sounds neat. I especially liked the actuarial work that actuaries had to do in Florida for hurricane season.

So any others that I missed?

wow, i think it’s outstanding that you’re really passionate about statistics.
it’s refreshing to hear this since i think statistics is useful.

What about a plain statistics major?

Career-wise, consultants travel a lot and have to be good with numbers.

The one actuary I talked to said that it’s a mindless number-grinding job on a day-to-day basis.

I’m a Statistics major.

Accounting is nothing like Statistics. I took accounting and found it to be extremely boring. If you like accounting, it’s a good career though.

Actuarial Science and Statistics are closely related. If your school doesn’t have AS or Stats major, you might look into Applied Mathematics or Mathematical Economics.

Actuary was named the #1 career for 2010, as far as pay, job environment, stress, growth opportunities, etc.

AS, Stats and any other applied mathematics track are VERY HEAVY in math. 3 or 4 levels of Calculus, Probability and Statistical Theory, Discrete Mathematics, Linear and Matrix Algebra, and throw in some Computer Science based math classes too.

Accounting not so much. You could probably get an accounting degree without having to take beyond College Algebra.

Stevens Institute in Hoboken has the only undergraduate major in quantitative finance.
