Majors

I am assuming after checking the majors offered at UCR that there is no pre-law major? Please correct me if I am wrong.

There is a pre-law major offered at UCR.

I was looking up the majors which I can switch into and I only viewed “law and society” which are combined with other majors such as “history/law and society.” Is this still considered pre-law?

There is no “Pre-Law” major. Law schools accepts a wide range of academic backgrounds. In fact, law schools look more for evidence of excellence in any academic program than specific areas of study.

UC Riverside offers a B.A. or B.S. in Political Science/Law and Society, Sociology/Law and Society, Psychology/Law and Society, History/Law and Society or Philosophy/Law and Society. If you are interested in a major with an emphasis on law, then you can consider declaring one of those areas of study as your major.

If you read carefully you would notice that the flyer indicates that there is no Pre-law major, but there is a law and society emphasis for certain majors and a pre-law advisory program.

“Law school and a career as an attorney are
the goals of many college students. UC Riverside
offers Pre-Law advising and other support
services to help students
attain that goal.
The range of choices for a major is broad. Some
students select English. Others may choose History, Philosophy, Political Science, or Sociology
in which to earn their bachelor’s degree. All of
these majors are available at UCR and can be
combined with UCR’s unique Law and Society
cooperative major for an even more comprehensive undergraduate major
.”

If I major in law and society/history, will I receive the same education as for a history degree?

I’m pretty sure you do. But you’ll have to take more courses than history majors in order to meet the requirements for law school.

First of all, law school is not like med school, there are no course requirements for admission to law school.

And kaptainkeepa, if you major in History/Law and Society, it will basically be a history degree, but with an emphasis in law. The degree requirements will be quite different from that of a general history major. The Law and Society emphasis is more demanding in terms of degree requirements and it allows students to gain an understanding of law and society, as well as critical thinking skills. Furthermore, it is unlikely that two students will receive the same education even if they are pursuing the same degree, because they may enroll in different courses to meet the degree requirements.
