I have a question about MIT majors: is there a specific astronomy major, or would I take it under physics?

All MIT departments are listed here; there is not an astronomy department per se, as you probably know. Course 8 (Physics) does offer an Astronomy focus, and there is a joint Astronomy minor with Course 12 (Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science).

It's pretty common here to do a little DIY-majoring if what you want to do isn't listed specifically in the course catalogue -- double-majors are common, as are minors, and almost all classes are open to any student, regardless of major.
