I don’t think this has ever happened before. Women’s Volleyball is also in the top 15, and women’s cross country is in the top 10. Men’s and Women’s tennis are perennially in the top ten, as are a bunch of other sports. The College just added women’s lax as a sport, too.
Commendable, but they are NCAA Division III in soccer. It would be considerably more impressive if they were Division 1. Not trying to put down UChicago - all things considered a very fine school.
Defensor–Where UChicago could go with this is Patriot League / Ivy League level where the competition is sufficient for an Olympic athlete (or even a basketball or football player) to take his / her skills to the highest possible levels (e.g. a Harvard rower or a Yale gymnast) but the sport does not become a minor league program for the big dollar professional leagues with all the attendant costs and distortions of purpose. In the meantime it’s good to see the sports teams competing to be good and to win.
