Are you black SCRLK?

Actually yes I am from Trinidad

I think I should clarify... I go to a proper school/institution because of the motivation of money and the prospect of a better life because of a better education. If I had all the money in the world I would "learn" through experiences, travel, etc but not traditional schooling. IMO people who just love to learn don't necessarily love school... in college you have to take ALOT of unwanted courses and your natural love of learning is stifled. If I didn't need the diploma, I wouldn't be in a traditional college setting.... I'd be out in the world learning by doing.

SCRLK Nice, i am from Bermuda with Dominican roots..

I enjoy working far better than going to school. Granted, I didn't experience college just yet, and I have a pretty nice (for my age, anyway) office job. I like working because I can make money, which makes me feel more productive than doing essentially useless school assignments. However, I realize the importance that doing well in school has in getting a good job, so I always try my hardest.

But addressing the original question...the primary goal of college, for me, is to establish myself in a challenging, well-paying career. Whether I'll "make a difference" or not is something I have yet to find out.

Is it because you're looking for a good job to make good money? (and if you are, don't be embarassed to say so -- that's normal)

-or-

Is it because you believe that you genuinely can make a difference?

-or-

Any other reason that you may have.

A common third choice would be ... doing what you love to do for a living .... for example, people who open businesses around their hobby/interest with no illusions of getting rich

This is so sad :-( As much as I love money (and believe me, I do), I'd hope to love what I do, even if it requires a slight sacrifice in my salary

Good point.

So...

-or-

Having the ability to do what you love for a living?

So given your logic scrLK, how do YOU make or plan to make a difference?

I guess I'm the only American Black on this board. Hah...

for me I can honestly say BOTH!

going to college b/c worked my butt off all of high school and sacrified enjoyment and fun for the work... anyway in the long run hope to make a difference rather than be a multi millionaire. of course, both is best.

My son used to say he wanted to be a doctor so he could make a good living. However, he eventually came to realize that he really, really loves music. He is going to college because, in his words, "I want to be able to make a living doing what I love." He would also like to make a difference, although not necessarily in the way the phrase is usually used. He would like to add something special to the musical world, whether by the way he plays or by writing music that will be played for a long time.

Recently he told me he had realized that he really didn't care about money much. He has come to see that you don't need a lot of money to be happy. Good thing, if he is going to be a "starving artist."

They are not mutually exclusive

Well, I never want to be poor, but I would love to make a difference. Law school fits them both. I'd love to end up working for someplace like the ACLU, MoveOn, ANSWER, or Sea Shepherd.

I wanna be an assassin but I need to do something that won't blow my cover.

good job to make enough money to have fun and do whatever i want
