People at my school say they will be making up stuff on their apps and saying colleges won't check...and what sucks is that they are probably right...

It's kinda unfair to people who actually do EC's and stuff

You gotta do wat you gotta do

i know. This kid, he went to one practice of the tennis team.. and never went again.. and started track but quit after 2 weeks said he's gonna put both of them on his apps. It ****ed me off cuz i dedicated so much time to them. Councilors should have the coach sign a note or tell them that the kid's on the team!

There's really no point. There is no perfect college, and even if they get into their super reach by lying, they could end up miserable. Probably because they wouldn't be able to handle the work. Really, a large part of admissions is luck- and a few extra hours won't help that. You can't make up the best sort of ECs, and they still have to have recommendations and essays and a transcript- which are more important than doing 100 hours instead of 2.

That makes me sooo mad. I swear like 50 clubs were started at my school this year and 45 have yet to meet. Ugh, people just making them to put on their apps, that makes me absolutely sick.

Well I guess clubs are minor and not really taken into account by colleges anyway, but at least do colleges have ways of verifying volunteer work, awards, and internships/jobs? I'd hope so.

It's obnoxious, but the most selective colleges will look for the accomplishments -within- the club, not just membership. You can't fake something truly amazing, like debate nationals or AIME (? am i getting the acronym right?) finalist.

I agree sqdwfe13!

TEENAGE ANTHEM: IT'S NOT FAIR!

Haha, get over it. People are always going to lie on their apps - you just need to do the right thing, put the truth on your app, and you'll probably [or hopefully] end up looking more genuine and REAL than the other person.

At least one of these people will get caught and when they do it will ruin there college admission chances. I will not take the chance of getting caught and would just leave out EC.

You can't lie about anything of great enough magnitude to pull you into HPYS if you were not borderline to begin with. Chances are if they were accepted, and they lied about tennis team, they would have been accepted had they not lied. That tiny, tiny boost is not worth lying, even if its a 99% chance of not being caught.

And the ECs that are lies significant enough to hook you into HPYS, have a significantly high risk of completely messing your life up, because its not just "okay, I lied and harvard found out - hopefully brown won't" its "okay, blacklisted, this will follow me for a long, long time, even when i get out of community college."

Now, I'm sure many people are thinking about optimization of the helping your app : chance of being caught ratio. That lies in the area of exaggeration. Not generation of false stuff, but taking what you have, and making it appear great. It's not about making up more quantity, its about selling what you do have. For example, McCain tried to sell his military service - he didn't make up anything. McCain prostituted himself, as nearly all political candidates do.
