Managing the school breaks

Both tuition and housing charges are made by semester but there are two payment plan options.

The copied links in the paragraphs below won’t work, so go directly to this page and click links there.

UA offers two low-cost payment plans: The BAMA Plan and the deferred payment plan. The BAMA Plan, Bama’s Affordable Monthly Alternative, is a simple monthly budget approach to paying tuition, college/course fees, residence hall room, Dining Dollars, campus meal plan, and parking decals charges for the academic year (fall and spring semesters). BAMA Plan convenience can be yours, interest-free, for just a $55.00 annual participation fee.

Students may defer up to one-half of each semester’s charges if at least one-half of the charges are paid when the student confirms his schedule.  The remaining balance may be deferred until approximately mid-semester for a $30 fee.  This option will be offered on the web when the student or designee accesses his/her account to confirm the Fall schedule.

For more information on Deferment of Registration Expenses, click here.

^^^ Please note that the date to sign up for the installment payment plans is early, check the links so you don’t miss the date. For Fall 2014, the date was in July.

^^ also note that the payment (if done in full) is expected before you can fully confirm your enrollment each semester. The Spring 2015 bill was due Dec 12 2014…and the Fall 2015 bill will be due Aug 7 or 14? You will be expected to pay the Fall semester bill in full (if no other arrangements made), and, yup, this will include tuition, fees, dorms, meal plans, dining dollars, parking fees, AND anything else that can be directly billed (AA/OA remainder, football tix, e.g.,). UA will not confirm your schedule unless the bill is paid. If you do not pay your bill by the due date, your student’s schedule will be cancelled and those seats will be released to other students.

Thanks aeromom! The information was very helpful. Kinda getting back to the original post and the question of finances for travel - Are travel costs able to be paid out of a 529 plan? I now need to figure out how a monthly bill would be paid for from a 529 plan as well.

This is a pretty comprehensive site: http://www.savingforcollege.com/articles/20090724-not-all-expenses-covered-by-529-plans
The way I read it: NO, travel is not covered…only the cost of attending school, not getting to/from there!

X-Mas break and Spring Break are the only ones REALLY worth flying for. Maybe one of the little breaks as well if there is another reason (see an ailing relative, Good snow at Aspen, etc). Unless one is within driving distance, it really isn’t worth going home for Halloween break.

^ lol…good snow in Aspen worth it every time!

If your student is on scholarship, money can be withdrawn up to amount of the scholarship with no penalty. We use these funds to cover travel etc. that would be non-qualified expenses. Just to be on the safe side, for our DDs housing & food, we use UA published COAs numbers for room & board and withdraw up to that amount to pay for her apartment & required sorority house meal plan. While the 529 money being withdrawn to pay for travel, apartment & food, these expenses do not total more than the scholarship value. One 529 surprise for us, was that the earnings on the investments within the 529 were taxed in total the year we closed it out. We didn’t investigate to see if that were because our withdrawals were not being paid to the educational institution, the amount of tax wasn’t that much and we couldn’t change our past actions.

Oooo, forgot about if you’re on scholarship - yes, then, use UA scholarship for travel/other expenses…and then use 599 for tuition expenses. Stress to your kids to KEEP ALL RECEIPTS & RECORDS for all 4 years!!!
