Manhattanville

Any thoughts or information about Manhattanville?

Manhattanville in West Harlem

^^^ Columbia University is building a new campus in the Manhattanville area of Manhattan. Manhattanville College is a private college located in Purchase, N.Y. Two different entities.

Has a reputation for accepting students who have potential but have had difficulties in HS. A friend's S went there on that basis, had scholarship, promptly lost it because of low grades, had to leave after parents racked up big debt to keep him there for another year. He pulled his grades up enough to get back some of scholarship, but not enough so that they could afford it.

So I guess the question I would have is do they provide the academic and financial support needed to keep such kids on track to graduate? I don't know. To be fair to the school, just because friend's kid couldn't manage it doesn't mean it is a common scenario.

Oh ok. Thanks. daughter isn't a struggling student in any way. I didn't realize that the school was that type. She's looking for a mostly or all-female, small school near home and some of Manhattanville's internships caught her eye in a big way. But she's not struggling and perhaps that wouldn't be the right circumstance for her. Bryn Mawr keeps looking better and better, except for the location.

If Bryn Mawr is a realistic school for her I think Manhattanville would qualify as a safety. That said, I'm sure that many students at Mville weren't "struggling," but perhaps middle-of-the-road.

Bryn Mawr is just as Amtrak ride away. :D I forget, has she considered Sarah Lawrence or Fordham Rose Hill? Both have female majorities.

She hasn't considered Sarah Lawrence because she would definitely not fit socially. Rose Hill is on her list.

The kids we've known at Manhattanville aren't the struggling type. Around here, they're the solid B students with loads of activities who want something small but close to Manhattan. The choices usually look like Sacred Heart in Fairfield (much further from NY), Adelphi, Hofstra. They're not pre-professional enough to want College of New Rochelle or Quinnipiac-- both of which have very solid offerings in a bunch of disciplines, but aren't great for a kid who wants to go off and study English Lit.

Zoosermom- from what you've posted about your D, Manhattanville is a very solid safety. If she loved Bryn Mawr, she may find the environment not quite intense enough for her.

Has she looked at Wesleyan, Bennington, Skidmore? A little closer to the vibe at Bryn Mawr.....

She loves, loves, loves Bryn Mawr but location is going to be much more important than anything else. We have to find a place she can live with where she could come home on the weekends if need be. Barnard is perfect, but it's so selective that who knows if she'd get in.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Barnard, zm. I have heard rave reviews from recent grads.

Zoosersmom, what makes BMC and Barnard more of a social fit than SLC?

Vasssar probably fits the bill socially and geographically, but it is at least as selective as its two sisters already on your list; likewise Wesleyan. Maybe Wheaton or Conn College?

Manhattanville is a very pretty school. The kids I know who went there were not struggling, but did not want to go too far away from home so went there. They all loved it, and in one case the student got into a very good law school from Manhattanville. However, the kids I know who went there were all boys. Manhattanville is not primarily a girls school as far as I know.

^^^ Funny that you would know only boys attending Manhattanville! The school is almost 70% female.

Is Trinity College an option? Probably less selective than Bryn Mawr and closer to the NY area. I only know one student who went there but she is just lovely (and, as a 7 sisters grad, I think she would've done great at my school or BMC!)

Ethel Kennedy and some other Kennedy women went to Manhattanville College.

Also Joan Kennedy, Teddy's ex.
And Maria Shriver for two years before transferring to George Washington.

Manhattanville used to be a well-known destination of well-bred Catholic daughters. It may still be, but I believe it has changed quite a bit. :)
