March 13

Received an interesting letter addressed to applicant’s parents yesterday.

Essentially, Denison is indicating they will announce RD decisions on March 13, and they are urging prospective students not to “jump the gun” so to speak, and pick another college ahead of that time.

This is pretty interesting. They must realize that without offering EA, they may be at a competitive disadvantage to other schools that are already wooing students.

Good luck to all.

My child got the same letter.

I agree; I don’t understand why Denison doesn’t offer EA. IMHO, they are at a competitive disadvantage to other schools who are wooing students with acceptances and scholarship money. March 13th is very late for a small LAC to reply to students who have already received EA offers and merit aid at several other schools. Big state flagships might be able to wait until March or April to reply, but I don’t think a small LAC in Ohio, as good as it is, can afford to do that.

The letter said Denison received 6,000 apps for 620 slots, but how many of those 6,000 students will have already mentally committed to other schools by the time Denison replies in March? Most of them, I’d wager. In the additional month or two that Denison takes to reply, students will have had dozens of interactions with coaches, music directors, professors, and admissions reps from schools that have already accepted them with merit aid. I think Denison is shooting itself in the foot.

@coldinMinny, I’m fairly certain we received a similar letter last year. My D heard good news from: U of MD in January, Dickinson (EA) in early February, and Denison in mid-March (just using a few examples). The timing had no bearing on her decision. BTW, Denison was definitely NOT the last school that she heard from.
