March 2012 SAT I Math Thread

Anyone think there’s a chance this test was hard enough for curve to be -1=800. It has happened

@dragon it asked for the shaded region. (if we’re thinking of the same question)

@msteiny1212: It was probably a medium level test. Hard is just pushing it since, in retrospect, it wasn’t hard. Just a bunch of cheap quasi-trick questions.

What would you guys do in my predicament?

Last time I took the test this January and received a 2250 (700 M, 750 CR, 800 W), but wanted to retake the test to bring up my math score because I felt I could improve if I made fewer careless mistakes. I felt tired by the end again, which reminded me why I did poorly on math in the first place, and now I see I have gotten 5 answers wrong just from the postings her.

I checked the other sections. I missed 10+ in reading and 4+ in writing.

What should I do?

The SAT doesn’t measure how nice of a person you are. And I am a VERY nice person. Jimmypod how do you think you did?

@msteiny1212 Those tests were older. I think CB got better about making math sections too hard.

@jeff
Cancel them now.

There is a good (25% chance IMO) that -1 is 800 (I am praying it is though)

IF not, I think -1 will be 780 no doubt

10+ in reading and 4+ in writing, and 5 in math? You are sure of these numbers then you should definitely cancel. This will probably come out significantly lower than 2250

@Jeffrey

I am almost in the same position that you are. I received a 2260 (720 M, 750 CR, 790 Wr) on the January test.

I also retook the math test but ended up feeling tired out by the end.

If in actuality you missed 10+ and 4+ in writing, I would cancel the score and retake it in May.

BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE SURE YOU MISSED 10 in CR. I am trusting that you did not exaggerate.

But I won’t be retaking this test another time. I think my math will be proven to be competent with my 36 in ACT math (coupled with 36 Science). The SAT is just… i hate this test.

@jeffrey I would cancel them. I’m a bit confused as to why you retook in the first place when there could have been other things for you to spend time on :/

Guys, should I cancel?
So far, I have 0 in writing, 0 in math, and 8+ in reading (lol)… My essay wasn’t that good, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I got like an 8. I need a 2250+.

@jeff - I’d cancel. pronto.

I believe was a medium test. Sorry to people with missed questions :(

@zzzzzz

If you are 8+ in reading, I wouldn’t cancel. You’d probably still make the 2250 (if you really did get 800s in both writing AND math)

Thanks! So yeah you would definitely retake? Is it hard for a white unhooked applicant to get into Harvard with a 700 SAT I math?

Sat I Math really don’t count as anything. You should take Math 2 and then another Subject test.

note to everyone: DO NOT RETAKE if you got 700 and above on everything.

y’all are just being paranoid now. if SATs was the ONLY thing on the application I’ld understand…

@zzzz
Don’t cancel if your super score needs a boost in writing and math. I’m at -0 writing and math too! Essay was at least a 10. So far -1 in CR, and I need a 2300+ :)

Good point. Ever since I was young though I wanted to be a presidential scholar and go to Harvard but I am starting to realize that I’m just not silverturtle and I should just continue with my passions (scientific research, filmmaking), and stop trying to be something I’m not (a perfect standardized test taker).

I guess I just figured someone excelling in Calc BC could get better than a 700 in math. The SAT is stupid.

@Lanayru
I got an 800 in math January but failed CR and W. I am afraid my essay might screw me over again like it did in January…

@zzzzz
Since length strongly correlates with higher scores, filling both pages with decent writing → 10+. Which means your so-far perfect writing MC might give you a 800.

@Lanayru
Lol I did do that last time but got an 8 (I also consider myself a good writer usage or mechanics wise. Apparently my argument wasn’t strong enough or something…) I just reproduced my essay and am gonna let my teacher read it. I will see how it goes. Thanks.

@zzzz
I didn’t do that in Jan and got a 8 :P
