March Madness: Admissions Style!

@Hawkace‌

As a big March Madness fan, I truly enjoyed lurking on this thread and seeing which one of your “seeds” would win the tournament. Sorry to read that it won’t be a high seed, but I’m sure you’ll do fantastic at Northeastern or another university.

Best of luck to you as you begin college this year.

Don’t count on waitlists. You got into some amazing schools :slight_smile: Do the best that you can at them. I mean, for some people, Northeastern, Michigan, and CWRU are their dream reach schools! Congrats man. You did nothing wrong. These schools cannot accept everyone. Outside of the CC world, you will see a hell of a lot more results like yours. You are clearly very bright, and you will succeed anywhere. It happened for a reason. I got rejected by USC. I believe that is because it wasnt the right school for me. Take this and stride and move on. Yeah, it sucks but it’ their loss. The reason why you are so down is because you counted on getting into the most selective schools in the country. That was a mistake. Going into this, you shouldve expected that. And this is for anyone in the future reading this.

Unless you are a Clinton, Obama, Bush, or Kennedy, DO NOT ANTICIPATE ACCEPTANCE. Odds are, you WILL be rejected. That’s the name of the game. It’s not an indictment against you. You can have perfect everything and your odds still arent high.

@‌hawkace

Hope you will visit Northeastern before you make your final decision. DS is a 2013 graduate of Northeastern University (PharmD) and had a fabulous experience there for 6 years. He was initially accepted at Tufts, the UCs he applied to (UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, UCI) and Cal Poly, but chose NU for the pharmacy program. NU is very underrated and overlooked by many, but it is an excellent school, especially with the co-op program integrated into the academic degree requirements.)

I wasn’t admitted to any of my reach schools and only one of my ranges accepted me. I know it’s ugly to be a sour loser, but it does hurt to see people who are obviously not as dedicated, hard-working, and enthusiastic as me about academics to get into top schools. I cannot help thinking many elite schools are wasting resources, scholarships, and opportunities on people who won’t/aren’t able to fully and truly enjoy/take advantage of them.

@Hawkace‌ I’m in the exact same position…probably going to Northeastern. I didn’t even get honors college or merit aid, so it’s even worse. College admissions have been all around unfair this year- not just for me, but for many of my friends.

Northeastern is a fantastic school as are a number of other schools you have been accepted at. Boston is a vibrant city loaded with college students attending top notch schools.
Your dissapointment is clearly understood, you left it all on the floor and didnt have the outcome you had wished for. The most important part of this is that you gave it your all, that is the only part of the process that you have any control over. Be proud of your efforts and go rock one of these great schools you were admitted to!

Thanks, everyone!

I just visited Case Western Reserve and it was great. I loved the campus feel and the entrepreneurial side of the students. I just found it a bit geeky, but that’s nothing too serious. I haven’t crossed out UMichigan. It turns out that UMichigan just needed some info before they give me my FA offer. Northeastern is sliding down my ranks.

@‌Qwerty568

Yep. I just realized that so many of my friends didn’t get what they wanted. This sucks. We all worked really hard, but nothing’s happening. I guess that we have to make do with what we have.

So sorry to hear about your Ivies. I got rejected by four Ivies (Brown, Princeton, Harvard, Yale) and Stanford, and it definitely sucks. I think the worst thing is going on Facebook and seeing everyone else getting accepted, and feeling that awful combination of self-pity, envy, and guilt for not being happy for your friends’ accomplishments.

You seem like a cool guy/girl, and I wish you all the best, go visit some of the schools you got into, who knows, maybe it will be love at first sight.

Case Western is a very good school. I actually wish I had applied there too. The great physicist Lawrence Krauss went to Case Western for undergrad.

Did he really? I thought he went to Carleton. I think he maybe taught at Case Western or something?

My mistake, you’re correct!

I still haven’t decided what school I’m going to next year, as I’m currently waiting for a FA offer from UMichigan.

Each day, I’m going to reflect on one of my applications:

First, we have UMinnesota.

University of Minnesota
Decision: Accepted
Money Awarded: $8,000 per year

I’m not sure about the money awarded, but it wasn’t enough to bring me to Minnesota. To be honest, I only applied here because I was desperate for an acceptance. I didn’t know anything about the college process, and UMinn offered me a fee waiver. It was a stupid mistake, but I learned from it. I got my acceptance back in October. The application wasn’t much, so I basically winged it. I immediately crossed it off of my list once I got an acceptance, because I didn’t imagine myself there. In the end, I regret applying here, and I’m sorry for whoever else applied UMinnesota.

It came in 5th in the March Madness Tournament. Right in front of Wash U and right behind Rutgers.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I have been pretty busy.

I visited Northeastern today and I absolutely loved it. I think that I found my match. The only problem that I have with this college is that I might have study for 5 years to get my degree, and the prestige of Northeastern is not quite high at my school, as most students get in.

The only thing that I’m waiting for now is my UMichigan FA offer. I’m done moping around. It’s time for me to use what I have and do something to change this world. I got big ideas and I think that Northeastern is my fit, however, I still have to pay $38K per year there which is quite expensive. Case Western is $33K. Rutgers is $24K for engineering and $3K for Business. I’m waiting for Michigan. I also found that I was rejected from UMich Ross preferred admission, which stung a lot.

Final Four of March Madness:
Northeastern vs Case Western Reserve
UMichigan vs Rutgers (in-state)

Any thoughts?

Congrats on finding a school that you have loved, @Hawkace! The only sting is that it is expensive. If you can afford that though, great! I know you were saying you want to get out of NJ and didn’t want to go to Rutgers, but Rutgers still is a great school for what you want to do! I can’t imagine you going to Case Western though…

Good luck on your FA package from UMich!

Most majors at NU are available with a four year 2 coop option.

@TheDidactic
thanks!
@TomSrOfBoston
Not when you’re an engineering major, I believe. Plus I want to try to get in 3 co-ops before I’m done. Hopefully, I can try to get the expenses down to $30K per year which is pretty reasonable.

Is it possible to appeal financial aid? Northeastern may match Case Western. Combined with coop income, that could bring the total cost down to $30k per year.

Northeastern is an excellent match for you…and I believe Boston will prove to be a good home too…this is all working out great!

I vote for Michigan!

@hungryteenager
Hmm… I could, but I doubt that anything will change. How’s CMU coming for you?
@SouthernHope
I thought that it wouldn’t, but it is actually working out in the end!
@michigandermom
Haha. Michigan is not out of the race yet. Who knows what will happen with the FA offer?
