Marching Band Anyone?

Hi guys!!

I recently enrolled @ U of M for next fall and I've really been thinking about joining the marching band (I'll be a freshie). I've marched all 4 years in high school, and I've honestly loved every minute of it. My only concerns are the audition process and the time commitment.

1) Audition: Like I said, I've played all 4 years (and 4 years in middle/elementary school), but I do not take private lessons and I don't exactly have the highest chair placement (8 of 12), and with my asthma it makes playing sometimes a little difficult (I play the clarinet woooohoooo!). I've marched in a competitive band(we've gotten 2nd-3rd out of 13 at our state competition all 4 years of hs), but there was no audition, so it really took a lot of the pressure off for me. I recently found some audition sheet music and I've been making a goal to practice @ least once a week so I'll be ready when the audition comes. For any current band students (or freshman thinking of auditioning like me) do you think I would have a shot at making it? I've loved band so much, and it would be a bit of a heartbreak if I couldn't continue it in college. :(

2) I'm going to be a psychology major in CLA, and I was just wondering how much band would conflict with my coursework/work outside of school. Is it going to take up all of my time, or is it pretty easy to balance band and school?

Sorry for the long questions, but any feedback would be really helpful!! TBH I'm a little nervous to go to such a big school and be surrounded by so many genius people, but I'm really excited to learn all I can about what it's like to be a gopher :) Thanks in advance for your help!
